Steamed Garlic & Ginger Pork Dumplings with Green Onion and Bamboo Shoots
I always had my eye on a bamboo steamer and let me tell you, best thing I ever owned. I think it’s great. It’s easy to clean up, it’s simple and aids in healthy cooking. Who wouldn’t want that? When I got my steamer, the first thing I thought of to make, was of course….DUMPLINGS! These dumplings are so fun and easy to make. Served right in the steamer! No dirty plates or dishes! My kind of night!
Here’s how I made them!
24 wonton wrappers
½ pound of ground pork (you could also use chicken or turkey)
1 c shredded (or sliced thin) savoy cabbage
5 large garlic cloves chopped fine
1 Tbs grated fresh ginger or 1 tsp ground ginger (dried)
2 Tbs of chopped bamboo shoots
2 Tbs soy sauce
1 Tbs sesame oil or peanut oil
½ tsp chili oil
2 green onions chopped (using only the white parts and light green) save the tops for garnish
½ tsp fresh cracked pepper
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl (excluding the wonton wrappers of course!)
Set aside the pork mixture and get ready to assemble.
Take one wonton wrapper and place about 1 tsp of pork mixture in the center. Wet all 4 corners of the wonton. Bring two opposite corners together, pinching at the top then do the same for the remaining two sides. (pictures below)
Now repeat the process for the rest of the pork mixture. Cover the ones that are done with a damp cloth or paper towel, they will dry out. You may make more than 24 or could be less, depending on how much filling you use.
When all are done, get your steamer ready. A bamboo steamer is necessary, if you don’t have one I will explain below what else you could possibly use.
Using a wok, place about a cup of water in the bottom, place bamboo steamer overtop and turn stove to medium-high heat and wait until steam starts to escape.
Once steam is present, take off each section of the steamer and place cabbage leaves or lettuce leaves on the bottoms and place dumplings ontop. This will prevent sticking.
Place the lid on and steam for about 10-15 minutes. You want the pork to be cooked fully so just cut one in half to see.
When they are done take steamer off the heat and remove lid and first basket and let cool for 5 minutes.
Garnish both baskets with green onion and serve with soy sauce. Enjoy!

If you don’t have a bamboo steamer…or wok.
Take a pot of boiling water and place a colander overtop, water cannot be touching bottom of colander. Line with lettuce or cabbage leaves, place dumplings on top and cover with a large lid or baking sheet if you don’t have a lid big enough. Then cook until done.You won’t be able to cook all of these at the same time so it will be in batches. But this method will be as close to steamer cooking as possible. (Definitely invest in a steamer, very affordable!)
