Whole Wheat Honey Rolls topped with Oats

These are fantastic. You can use them as side rolls for dinner or use them for hamburger buns! They're on the healthier side and only take 30 minutes to make! The honey in these add a great sweetness without it being overpowering. The oats also give a bit of texture and grainy-ness. You can't go wrong with these!

Here's How I made them...


2 Tbs active dry yeast

1 c + 2 Tbs warm water

1 Tbs of sugar

3 Tbs of honey

1/3 c oil

1 egg (room temp)

Pinch of salt

1 Tbs garlic powder (optional)

2 ½ c whole wheat flour

½ c all-purpose flour (more or less)



  1. In a stand mixer (or large bowl) combine the yeast, sugar, honey and warm water. Let stand for 7 minutes

  2. Add in the oil, egg, salt, garlic powder and whole wheat flour and knead, using dough hook (or wooden spoon at first until combined then dump onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes)

  3. Once the mixture is well combined, add a little bit of all-purpose flour just until dough isn’t sticky anymore. You may not need the whole ½ c, you may need more. (I used only a bit of all-purpose just because it brought the dough together nicely, using all whole wheat flour, it didn’t come out the way I wanted it to. The small amount of white flour really does make a difference but you can always just use all whole wheat flour if you like)

  4. Divide your dough into 6-8 equal ball shaped pieces and press the top part of the ball into oatmeal, covering the top.

  5. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

  6. Grease a large baking sheet, or use parchment paper, and place the dough balls about 4 inches apart and let rest as the oven preheats.

  7. Bake for 9-12 minutes, or until the tops are nice and golden.

  8. Serve as rolls or use as hamburger buns! ENJOY!
