Baked Blooming Onion


The Blooming Onion. This was the first time I made this ya know! And instead of battering it and frying it I decided to bake it, for a more healthier version. Easier too I would imagine! Don't have to deal with a bunch of hot oil and coating.

It's super simple to make, trust me. And you can really use any kind of onion. I used a sweet Vidalia Onion. I may use a Spanish onion next time, and coat with a bunch of sticky sweetness to caramelize it. We will see! But for THIS recipe, you only need a few ingredients. An Onion (duh!) egg, breading (bread crumbs/panko and seasoning of your choice)

This is what yours will look like before you bake it! Not every single inch of the onion petals will be coated, that's totally fine. Unless you really want to spend every second on them. It is very tedious. But, as an onion lover, I was ok with eating more onion compared to breading.

And when it comes out of the oven, it blooms so beautifully! And for the cost of this....considering you probably have most ingredients already. (hee hee) You could make 5 for the price you pay at a restaurant for one that's absorbed so much oil! WIN! Here's how I did it...

Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion (Vidalia or any of your choice)

  • 1 egg + splash of water or cream

  • Panko breadcrumbs (or regular breadcrumbs, crushed cheez-its could also be a nice substitute!)

  • Seasoning

*I used blackening seasoning and garlic powder. You can also use plain old salt and pepper, or minced onion, sesame seeds, red pepper flakes, parmesan!! Really it's whatever tickles your fancy when you're making it!

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees

  2. Take your onion and cut off the top NOT THE ROOT! That's what we need to hold it together. About 1/2 inch or so, until you see all of the layers.

  3. Peel the outermost skin off the onion. Now you have a clean onion with the root still in tact.

  4. Flip your onion upside down, so the root is facing you and the part you cut off is placed on a cutting board.

  5. When you are staring at the root, place the tip of your knife 1/2 inch away from the root on the onion, and then slice down. Repeat all the way around the onion.

  6. Flip your onion over and now you will see all of your petals!

  7. Whisk together your egg and splash of water or cream and brush onto each onion petal, immediately breading/seasoning after. Continue to do this until everything is coated.

  8. Place on a baking sheet (I used foil just because it's an easy clean up) and bake for 20 minutes or until desired done-ness.

  9. If you want to make the sauce I have in my photos, I took 1 c plain greek yogurt, 3 Tbs ketchup, salt and pepper, 2 garlic cloves minced, 1 tsp horseradish and one scallion chopped. Mix well and there you are! You can dip this onion into anything really.
