Garlicky, Cheesy, Buttery Biscuits {step-by-step}

This was a first timer moment - and they came out super wonderful!

I wanted to do a step by step so that you can actually see what i'm doing from time to time.

Sometimes pictures are much easier to follow than word directions so

here we go!

Preheat oven to 475 - Grab a bowl, and add in your flour

Next the salt, pepper and baking powder.

Give it a good whisking

Then add the cold cubed butter. It's very important the butter is super cold - I cube mine and put it back in the fridge for 20 minutes before using.

Make sure to gently break apart the butter pieces in the flour so all are coated and separated

Then - using preferably a pastry cutter, mash up the butter to pea sized pieces. I do not have one so I used a fork

Once done, you'll have your base mixture

Now for the best part, the garlic!!

And da cheeeeeeese

Make sure to get all pieces coated and garlic separated in the flour

And then, make a well and add your buttermilk - slowly stirring

Stir until JUST combined

You want the dough to stay really tender

OK! now heavily flour your work surface

Pour out your dough

And form into a rectangle

Roll out to about 15 inches, you'll need a lot of flour - the buttermilk will start to make the dough stick to your work surface so make sure to keep flouring

Then fold the top 1/3 down and the bottom 1/3 up

Then turn the dough so the two folds are on the left and right and roll out again

Then fold again

And again top to bottom

And roll out to 1-2 inches thick

If you have a biscuit cutter, please use it! The edges are much sharper than a glass and will help with the rising of the biscuits.

NOW - cut out your biscuits

you should have about 12 biscuits, any leftover dough, make more!

you can also roll out the dough to be thicker and have about 6 biscuits.

whatever you desire!

Now place on a parchment lined baking sheet.

and coat with butter

Bake for 12-15 minutes until cheese is bubbling and tops are browned.

And here we have it!

I also melted some butter mixed with fresh minced chives and poured over the top of the biscuits as soon as they came out of the oven.

talk about heaven.

Garlicky, Cheesy, Buttery Biscuits {step-by-step}

yield: 12 thick biscuits

prep time: 15 minutes

cook time: 12-15 minutes


  • 2 c flour

  • Pinch of salt

  • ½ tsp of pepper

  • 2 ½ tsp baking powder

  • 1 stick (1/2 c) cubed COLD butter

  • 1 heaping Tbs pressed garlic (about 5 cloves)

  • ½ c extra sharp white cheddar cheese grated/cubed

  • 1 c buttermilk

Chive Butter:

  • ½ stick of butter

  • 1 Tbs fresh chives minced


  1. Preheat oven to 475 degrees

  2. In a large bowl mix all of the dry ingredients together, add the butter – using a pastry cutter, cut the butter into the flour (or use a fork to mash) until small pea sized pieces.

  3. Add the cheese and garlic – mix well so all is coated with flour

  4. Make a well, slowly add the butter milk and mix JUST until combined.

  5. Pour the dough onto a well floured surface and roll out to a 15 inch square. Fold the top to the middle, fold bottom to the middle – roll out again, then fold the left side to the middle, right side to the middle, top to the middle and bottom to the middle. Roll out again – these are going to be thick, so roll until the dough is about 2 inches thick.

  6. Using a biscuit cutter – or top of a drinking glass, cut out 6 biscuits, only re-roll ONCE, and cut out another 6.

  7. Bake on a parchment lined baking sheet for 12-15 minutes until browned ontop.

  8. In a microwave melt the butter and mix with chives. When biscuits are done, heavily coat the biscuits as soon as they come out of the oven.
