Salted Watermelon Margaritas

How's that for a nice summer drink?? Watermelon itself is so dang refreshing. I don't know about you but biting into a fresh slice of watermelon with some salt on top, whoa. I'm not talkin your table salt, throw that in the trash. I'm talking chunky flaked salt. Just a touch and it really brings the watermelon to a whole new leve.

But THEN salted watermelon mixed with ice cold smooth tequila? oh no I hope I don't fall.

There was a time years ago I went camping and drank tequila from the bottle until I couldn't see straight and I ended up yaking all over the woods. It was a time that horrified me for years to come because it made me hate tequila. Anytime I smelled it I would dry heave.

Until recently. Just out of the blue I wasn't sickened by the thought. My sweet husband was like "margs tonight?" and I was like sure why not! And then I wondered if I was ok...like Carly you don't like margaritas but ok sure let's give it a go.

I went and got some tequila, fresh watermelon and limes and that's IT!

I already had the salt, Maldon salt if you were wondering. Best flaky salt there is and it really is great on the rim. You aren't being jipped out of a good salt lick when you down your marg.

You can choose your mix in but watermelon was what my husband and I were in the mood for. To keep this fresh, get the fresh fruit. No flavored sugary mix in drink - no simple syrup - just do the straight up fruit my guy.

All you have to do is blend it up and then strain it if it's pulpy. Fresh fruit juice is it.

And lots of ice. You want everything cold. I made sure my watermelon and limes were refrigerated, tons of ice on deck and to get that tequila nice and icy smooth. I'm not really one to shake and pour. I don't do that whole thing. I just salted the rims, filled the glasses with tons of ice, poured in two shots each and then poured in fresh squeezed lime juice and our watermelon puree. Mixed with the closest utensil. done.

These suckers go down so easily and I know it sounds strange but it felt like a clean buzz? No added crap filled with sugar or colorings...just simple ingredients and it made for a nice cleaner buzz. These margs are the definition of summer and everyone will be talkin about them. The color themselves are so pretty!

*clink* cheers.

Salted Watermelon Margaritas

yield: 8 drinks

prep time: 10 minutes

  • 1 bottle of your favorite tequila

  • 1/2 of a large fresh watermelon

  • 3 limes juiced

  • Salt for rims (I used Maldon)

  1. Make sure all your ingredients are cold as can be.

  2. Take your watermelon, slice and take off the rind, cubing your watermelon.

  3. In a blender, blend your watermelon with a good pinch of salt, until smooth.

  4. Strain your watermelon juice, it's pretty pulpy, you don't have to do this step but I recommend for a smoother drink. I used a fine mesh strainer, not one used for draining pasta.

  5. Juice your three limes

  6. Get a shallow dish and pour in some salt.

  7. Take your serving glasses and wet the rim, I used a lime wedge and just rubbed it all around the rim.

  8. Dip your lime coated rims in salt. The shallow dish helps to get the salt on evenly.

  9. Fill glasses with ice and pour in two shots of tequila and 1/2 Tbs or small splash of the fresh lime juice.

  10. Fill remainder with watermelon juice. Garnish with lime.

  11. Stir and ENJOY!!
